1. POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Director of Coaching (DoC) will:

  • develop the necessary skill set of all Coburg GIANTS Basketball (CGB) coaches through the provision of an inclusive, innovative and collaborative management style;
  • provide appropriate direction, training and education to CGB coaching staff;
  • manage CGB representative programs including Big V League and VJBL programs;
  • define and maintain a clear high-performance pathway for CGB athletes;
  • ensure all athletes and coaches adhere to CBA’s core values of Respect, Professionalism, Community, Pathways and Pride, and “We are One Coburg GIANTS Philosophy”;
  • develop a community-based culture at Coburg Basketball Association where all members are valued, diversity encouraged and our shared love for basketball is celebrated.

2. Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Coaching role includes the following:
Big V – Youth League (YL) Programs
  • Actively identify, develop, recruit, appoint and support Big V coaches.
  • Conduct a transparent athlete and coach selection process from the development of a clear selection policy and process.
  • Conduct relevant education and/or information sessions with coaches, athletes, and parent/s.
  • Attend relevant games and step in as coach of a team if ever necessary.
  • Attend team trainings, ensuring you see each team weekly mentoring coaches and players while identifying potential talent.
  • Provide coaches bi-annual formal feedback and mentor coaches to maximise each coach’s potential.
Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) Program
  • Attend relevant night home games and coach a VJBL team if ever necessary.
  • Attend team trainings, ensuring you see each team frequently, mentoring coaches and players while identifying potential talent.
  • Provide coaches bi-annual formal feedback and mentor coaches to maximise each coach’s potential.
  • Actively identify, develop, recruit, and appoint junior representative coaches and athletes to teams.
  • Conduct a transparent selection process from the development of a clear selection policy and process for the recruitment of coaches and athletes.
  • Conduct relevant education and/or information sessions with coaches, athletes and parents/guardians/carers.
Programs & Domestic Competition Pathways
  • Oversee the coaching of Coburg GIANTS Basketball (CGB) programs. Whilst it is not expected you attend all sessions; you must ensure that a quality product is offered to our members. These programs should be designed with transition from domestic into VJBL and VJBL into Big V as appropriate.
  • Facilitate at least two domestic coaches’ courses per year.
  • Provide development opportunities and pathways for domestic coaches such as online resources.
Administration and Reporting
  • Appointed member of the Coburg GIANTS Basketball Elite Programs Committee.
  • Provide verbal reports to the Coburg GIANTS Basketball Elite Programs Committee Meetings.
  • Provide a monthly written report via the Coburg GIANTS Basketball Elite Programs Committee to the CBA Board.
  • Participate and represent CBA at Basketball Victoria (BV) in coach’s forums and sports events as necessary.
OHS
  • Ensure that all facilities are safe to use before training and games and in situations that they are not, together with the Competition Administrator / Facilities Managers take necessary actions to ensure they are. In your absence, holding coaches accountable to the same requirements.
  • Together with VJBL Registrar ensure all WWCC are in place and that correct strategies are undertaken to ensure vulnerable youth are not put in unsafe environments.
  • Ensure that support programs are designed and implemented for the mental well-being and safety of coaches and athletes with proper education for the identification and management of any sports related mental health issues for themselves, their peers and players.

3. Skills & Selection Criteria

  • Vision and a strategic mind that can see the ‘big picture’ in terms of achieving sporting excellence.
  • Demonstrate a professional attitude and strong work ethic.
  • High level of prioritisation and organisational skills.
  • Driven by strong ethics and values, is open, honest and accountable for their actions.
Essential
  • Ability to deliver innovative scaffolded programs that cater for all levels of basketball from Junior Domestic to the elite, State and National levels.
  • Track record of basketball success in developing various levels of players and teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal, non-verbal and written including electronic) with parents, athletes, coaches and the wider community. Including providing meaningful feedback.
  • Ability to work as a leader of a team and also as a self-driven individual.
  • Proven coaching ability and proven experience in developing and mentoring coaches and evaluating performance.
Preferred
  • BV Coaching Accreditation Level: Association, Performance or Master.
  • Extensive experience running a Representative Program, Big V program or coaching at a State Level.
  • Experience in using various basketball software platforms for game performance analysis.
  • Experience in inclusion programs.

4. Delegation

In the absence of the incumbent, their manager shall delegate another staff member of equal authority or higher to undertake the incumbent’s responsibilities.

5. Key Performance Indicators

  • Develop teams in both genders and at all age levels from VJBL Representative Teams through to Big V League.
  • Improvement year on year to our goal of equality reached in the female and male participation rates.
  • Improvement in the majority of teams for grading of all our Big V and VJBL teams over a two-year cycle.
  • Improvement in our goal of equality reached of female coach’s numbers.
  • Improvement in coach feedback on job satisfaction.
  • Increased number of Coburg GIANTS Basketball players and coaches being involved in Basketball Victoria’s state development pathways.
  • Improved performance of coaches and teams at high performance and elite level.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of inclusion programs such as indigenous, all abilities and walking basketball.
