1. How to become a referee

If you would like to become a referee the first step is to go your club delegate to pass information to CBA Administrator

You will then be referred to the Referee Advisor at your local basketball association who is responsible for conducting the orientation courses for beginner referees.

Beginner courses are typically held over four or five weeks (session length and days vary) and include theory work and practical on-court experience.

All you require is a readiness to learn, we will provide you with a whistle and rule book.

Minimum age to become a referee is 14 years of age

2. Reasons to become a referee

There are so many reasons to become a referee which are listed below:

  • Earn money and work flexible hours
  • Be physically active and get fit
  • Be involved in basketball (especially if you love the game)
  • Gain a better understanding of basketball and its rules
  • Meet new people, make new friends and share many great experiences
  • Improve your life skills (e.g. communication, independence, confidence, decision making and awareness)
3. Support and how to improve being a referee
All referees are coached and observed regularly by a team of Referee Supervisors, the Referee Adviser, referee coaches and senior referees who all provide feedback and solutions to areas for improvement. This is coupled with experience you gain each week by being faced with challenges that you learn to overcome. With this experience and knowledge come better opportunities to referee higher quality games and be paid at a higher rate.

EOI will be emailed on socials for next beginner referee school when the current school finishes
