Return to Sport Update

02 November 2020

Dear Coburg Basketball Association ,

Please find information below regarding Victorian Government Sports Vouchers, a Return to Sport update and the last chance to RSVP to the 2020 Women In Basketball Event.

Victorian Sports Vouchers

The Victorian basketball community is set to benefit from the Victorian Government’s $21 million investment into community sport.

Basketball Victoria have been advocating the use of Government sports vouchers for some time and more recently in conjunction with VicSport and affiliates through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yesterday’s announcement of the Get Active Kids voucher program will support a large number of Victorian children with the costs of participating in sport and recreation activities. The program will provide $200 vouchers to help eligible families with the cost of uniforms and equipment, as well as membership and participation fees.

The program will launch in 2021, with further details around eligibility criteria and how to apply to be announced in coming months.

This is fantastic news for grassroots and community basketball and this will greatly assist in our return to sport across the state.

Return to Sport Update

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said (Sunday, November 1) he was confident that indoor sport would start by the end of the year but cautioned that indoor spaces provided a much higher risk of transmission.

"It will progressively go from outdoors to indoors, from non-contact to full contact. Across the board for age groups from children to adults," he said. "I am confident that will happen this year and we are on the path to this."

Our current situation in relation to the number of people allowed per venue/facility or per space is currently in negotiation with DHHS, SRV and the LGA working group. The current DHHS guidelines stipulate that a ‘facility’ is capped at 20 people only, regardless of the number of courts or in fact number of annexes.

A refined definition of ‘Facility / Zone / Space’ is being re-worked by DHHS and Basketball Victoria have put our case forward as strongly as possible.

The agreed definitions of space and density set earlier in June in relation to zones & areas are (at this stage) not the same today.

We will continue these discussions and provide an update as soon as there is a change.
